Borough High Street: A panorama, showing the east side between St Thomas Street, taken from the street map by John Tallis, published in 1838. This part of the street was once lined entirely by large inns, among them the famous Tabard Inn, described in Geoffrey Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'. Apart from the remaining part of the George Inn, all the inns have vanished, although there are a few pubs. The alleyways, like King's Head Yard and White Hart Yard, are a reminder of where the entrances to the inns were situated. The picture labels the relevant inns and shows pictures of who those entrances look today. The pictures have been taken at different times within the last two years.
