Suggestions for ways to see parts of London you may not have visited before. Most of the walks would take between 30 minutes and an hour. We hope you 'get out more' and enjoy the short walks suggested below !

There are plenty of things to do in London that will give you a chance to explore places you may not have been to before. Each suggested walk carries directions of where to walk from a railway or DLR station.

Thames Barrier and Thames Barrier Park

Now that the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) has opened a new branch line to London City Airport, this has opened up access to the Royal Docks. Take any DLR train to Poplar and change onto a train bound for King George V DLR Station. Take the train as far as Pontoon Dock DLR Station. Use the stairs or the lift to get down to ground level. You will be beside the entrance to the Thames Barrier Park.

Enter the park and visit the cafe (which also has toilets). It is open seven days a week and closes about 5.30 pm. Once you are refreshed with a cup of tea, you can explore the park, especially the long sunken garden, one of the most unusual gardens in London.

Finally, walk towards the Thames and gain splendid views of the Thames Barrier. This location has particularly spectacular views on a sunny evening, when the metallic covering of the piers on the Thames Barrier catch the colours of the sunset.

Victoria Dock Footbridge and ExCeL Centre

Take any DLR train to Poplar and change onto a train bound for King George V DLR Station. Take the train as far as Pontoon Dock DLR Station. Use the stairs or the lift to get down to ground level. Cross the busy road and turn left, walking a short distance until a signpost points to the ExCeL Centre. Turn right into a short road that leads to Victoria Dock. When you come to the side of the dock, turn left where you will find a high footbridge.

Use the public lift in the Victoria Dock Footbridge and gain wonderful views across to dock. To the east, you can see the runway of London City Airport. To the west, you can see Millennium Dome and the tall buildings at Canary Wharf.

Take the public lift at the other end and walk towards the ExCeL Centre. Walk up the steps and past the main entrance. Walk under the covered way and ahead of you will be Custom House DLR Station. You can take a train back to Poplar DLR Station.
